SONIC YOUTH SIDE PROJECTS

You know who they are. They've only been releasing consistent recordings since the early 80's, but they are much more than Sonic Youth. Each Sonic Youth member participate in very active side projects that make Sonic Youth look like a side project. Here we look at a few of these.

'08 came and went! We played lots of music in 08. Had a few concerts (Battlehooch played a sick set, interviewed thee Oh Sees, and M&M Blues revolutionized the world, etc. etc.), a few avant-garde performances (Post-Thanksgiving free improv, performance of Cage's 4'33'', etc. etc.) and we played one horrible drone piece (yuck!).

Anyways, thank you for listening and your kind words about our show. Keeping this blog updated is tough stuff but we will try our best to keep going! More great shows coming up in 2009.

Our drone show at the very includes a performance of an improvisation performed by the DJs. It is perhaps one of the worst drone pieces. It is a very good example of how not to make a drone piece. We also learn that drone is a lot harder than one thinks.

FREE JAZZ

Ah, free jazz: the last great adventure in jazz history that is still vibrant and exciting for today. We played some classics, some not- so-classics, but everything here avoids traditional jazz notions of tonality structure.

Featuring the likes of: Orenette Coleman, Matthew Shipp, Derek Bailey, Peter Brotzmann, John Coltrane, Cecil Taylor, Albert Ayler, Otomo Yoshihide, and more.
